Well of Mercy offers spiritual companionship, emotional support, respectful hospitality and quiet sanctuary for adults in need of respite from daily demands, expectations and stresses or those who may simply wish to move apart for a time of prayer, rest and renewal.

Well of Mercy is not a clinical facility, conference center or meeting place. Well of Mercy is a place where adults working through grief, loss, transitions, fatigue, recovery or desiring some private time with God can find a healing presence. It is dedicated to serving the individual.

Well of Mercy, a ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, opened its doors in September, 1997. Several thousand overnight and day guests have been served since the ministry opened.

Well of Mercy is situated on 110 wooded acres in the rolling hills of the Piedmont. Guests can take advantage of nature trails on this sacred piece of land. Two creeks cut through the property, creating a nurturing environment alive with the healing sounds of running streams. Many paths and benches along its banks provide a quiet places for a stroll, for daydreaming, nature viewing and most of all for being still and present.

The Executive Director is accountable to a dynamic and engaged Board of Directors for the day-to-day operations of Well and for the achievement of major strategic objectives. Current staffing includes an operational staff of 5 full and part-time positions, two Sisters of Mercy as well as dedicated volunteers.

Position Overview

The Board of Directors is searching for an Executive Director who can effectively manage Well of Mercy’s resources, both financial and human, to most effectively achieve the Well’s mission and sustain the ministry. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader with a personal or vocational connection of passion for the kind of service Well offers and a commitment to the kind of vibrant community of Well stakeholders needed to sustain the ministry. The successful candidate will come equipped with leadership prowess, and an appreciation for Well of Mercy’s mission. He or she should have a proven track record in attracting and sustaining funding sources and nurturing a vital donor base.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate possesses a blend of the following demonstrable skills, experiences, and other qualifications:

  • Senior management experience in an organization of similar scope and size.
  • A proven track record in developing and maintaining relationships with foundations and major donors in the $20k range or larger.
  • Ability to conceptualize, communicate and lead the organization to shared visions and new directions, in response to changing needs and opportunities.
  • Ability to attract, develop and retain staff and volunteers as well as to promote a high level of staff performance and to utilize their talents effectively.
  • Exceptional public and interpersonal communication skills - including speaking, writing, and consensus building.
  • Ability to analyze problems and opportunities, and to utilize appropriate stakeholders in the outcome.
  • Experience working for and partnering with a volunteer Board of Directors.
  • Financial management experience with a budget of at least $500,000, including budgeting, oversight, compliance, and reporting abilities.
  • Willingness to work occasional nights and weekends to support the Board of Directors and community events.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications, database management and the Internet.
  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, with at least 8 years of management experience required. An advanced degree is preferred.
  • Optimism, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.
