Sisters of Mercy of the Americas
Well of Mercy is one of many sponsored ministries of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. The order was founded by Catherine McAuley in 1831 in Dublin, Ireland.
Today the Sisters minister in education, health care, social services, spiritual companionship and respond to other needs of our times. They counsel, comfort, speak for justice and to those who are economically and spiritually poor. Catherine lives through each Sister of Mercy and the legacy she left is beyond measure. Currently, there are over 6,000 Sisters worldwide and nearly 2,000 Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in the United States.
The Sisters of Mercy are rooted in four core values inspired by the life of foundress Catherine McAuley:
- Spirituality
- Community
- Service
- Social Justice & Critical Concerns.

The Sisters’ five Critical Concerns are incorporated into the mission and ministry of Well of Mercy:
- Earth
- Immigration
- Nonviolence
- Women
- Racism
