We are excited to announce that in the coming months, Well of Mercy will install a new garden to honor our Foundresses: Sister Brigid McCarthy, RSM, and Sister Donna Vaillancourt, RSM.
The Inspiration Behind the Foundresses Garden
The inspiration for the garden goes back to 1980, when Sister Donna had a dream of standing in a beautiful meadow with Sister Brigid. As they looked toward two distant mountains, they saw a mass of monarch butterflies flying between the peaks.
From Dream to Reality: Mercy Institute
Although the dream didn’t come to life right away, Sisters Brigid and Donna pursued ministry together through the Mercy Institute from 1987 to 1991.
- Sister Brigid counseled individuals, families, and groups.
- Sister Donna led retreats and workshops.
During these years, they repeatedly heard the same question from those they served: “Do you know a place where I can go to get away for a time apart?”
At the time, they didn’t know of such a place—but they felt called to create one.
Founding Well of Mercy
The Sisters sought discernment from the Sisters of Mercy, who supported their vision. Even if the ministry didn’t succeed, the Sisters of Mercy believed the land would still be a good investment.
What began as a hope for a place of rest and renewal soon became a reality—and the ministry of hospitality and healing has thrived ever since.
Honoring Their Legacy
Now in its 26th year of ministry, Well of Mercy remains deeply connected to the spirit of Sisters Brigid and Donna. Although they retired and moved away a few years ago, their essence continues to shape the hospitality we offer every day.
We are grateful to honor them with the Foundresses Garden, a space that reflects their dream and legacy, while they can still visit and feel the appreciation of everyone touched by their ministry.
