With 2025 comes a season of new beginnings at Well of Mercy, including a heartfelt warm welcome to our new Executive Director, Lea P. Slaton. The Search Committee is thrilled to announce that Lea accepted the position and began her training on January 2. Lea brings both a fresh perspective and a deep understanding of Well’s unique and critical ministry.
In Her Own Words
Lea describes her personal connection to Well of Mercy beautifully:
“I have been a frequent flyer at the Well since 2018 and have tasted the healing quiet, walked the paths of prayer, and eaten delicious meals with interesting people. I am looking forward to putting my creativity and talents to work at Well of Mercy, which has been a place of nourishment for me, and I treasure the opportunity to serve as its steward and executive director.
Bringing a Wealth of Experience
Lea’s extensive background in ministry and administration is a perfect fit for Well’s mission. She served as pastor at Wilson’s Mills Christian Church in Clayton, NC, since 2005. Before entering ministry, Lea spent 15 years with the Department of Health and Human Services, working primarily with adult and nursing home divisions. Her skills in administration, budgeting, psychotherapy, and program planning offer a valuable foundation for her role at Well.
Her educational accomplishments include:
- Doctor of Ministry in Spiritual Growth and Development
- Master of Divinity
- Master of Social Work in Mental Health
- Bachelor of Arts in Sociology
Aligned with Well’s Mission
Lea’s work in both secular and spiritual settings reflects her alignment with the mission and values of Well of Mercy, including the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy: Earth, Women, Non-Violence, Anti-Racism, and Immigration.
Her current community involvement highlights her dedication to these values:
- Board Chair, Christians Caring for Creation
- Member, Valle Crucis Women’s Writers’ Group
- Graduate, Racial Equity Institute Phase 1 Training
- Member, Commission on Ministry, Christian Church of North Carolina
A Personal Touch
Lea’s personal interests bring warmth and creativity to her leadership. She loves coffee, music, painting, playing the piano, reading, writing, baking, snorkeling, and walking her dog. Lea, her husband Joe, her mother, two cats, and their dog are relocating closer to Well of Mercy, embracing this new chapter together.
Smooth Transitions
Lea will work closely with Sandra, Well’s retiring Executive Director, throughout January to ensure a seamless transition. Sandra’s last day is January 31, 2025.
Join us in extending a warm welcome to Lea P. Slaton as she begins her journey as steward of Well of Mercy’s mission!
