Fred Rogers once said, “Deep within each of us is a spark of the divine just waiting to be used to light up a dark place.” These words are a much-needed reminder in our chaotic world. The image of an indwelling “God Spark” inspires and motivates us—but it can also feel daunting.
When dark places seem to abound and our own light feels faint, how can we be a vessel of light? This question has challenged me deeply, but I’ve found hope in two key practices: rest and remember.
Rest: Stepping Away from the Chaos
Fatigue often obscures our divine spark. Perhaps this is why Jesus invited his disciples to, “Come apart with me to a quiet place to rest.”
Rest isn’t just about physical recovery; it’s about stepping away from the noise and chaos of life to find a place that feels safe, accepting, and free of judgment. In this stillness, we can disconnect from distractions and truly begin to rejuvenate.
Remember: Reconnecting with Your True Self
Rest allows us the space to re-member—to gather the scattered parts of ourselves. It’s a time to reflect on these important questions:
- Who and what do I love?
- Who and what loves me?
- In whose image am I created?
- What brings me joy?
- What gifts (my “loaves and fishes”) can I offer, and who most needs them?
- What is the work I most need to do?
By taking time to rest and reflect, we realign ourselves with our divine purpose. We remember that our spark is not solely for us—it’s a reflection of God’s light, meant to shine through us and illuminate the dark places in the world.
Be the Light
In the stillness of rest and the clarity of remembering, we rediscover our God Spark. We are reminded that we don’t have to carry the weight of the world alone. Instead, we become vessels through which God’s light can shine.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take the time to step away, rest, and reflect. Your light, no matter how small it feels, can illuminate even the darkest spaces.
Peace and light to you all,
Peg Cartner
